CHAPTER SEVEN

Billie rode the short distance back to the festival grounds. As expected, around three dozen people were gathered beneath the parking lot lights that surrounded the commissary kitchen building and dotted the rest of the festival grounds. As she walked toward the kitchen, she watched in horror as they held up their cameras and took photos of themselves over the area in the sand still marked where the body had been found.

“I think the twins are still inside cleaning up,” Asher said. “I’ll be out here for a little while moving the camera to focus on the area.”

“What are you going to tell them if they ask you what you’re doing?” Billie asked.

“As if they’ll even look up from their cameras long enough to take any notice of me,” Asher said. “But if they do, I’ll just tell them that I’m changing the battery before the festival in the morning.”

“Okay,” Billie said. “I’m going to lock up my office and head home. Are you spending the night here or on the boat?”

“I think I’ll stick around here tonight,” Asher said. “But I’m going to offer one of the twins the fifth wheel as a rental.”

“You are?” Polly walked out ahead of her sister. “Are you really going to rent to one of us?”

Asher nodded. “That was my thought,” he said. “But I do plan to sleep there tonight. With everything going on I don’t want to be too far from this place.”

“Or from Billie,” Liza added.

“Right, or from Billie,” Asher said, blushing wildly.

“It’s okay,” Polly said. “I think we can handle being together for another night without killing each other.”

“You might be careful how you word things right now,” Asher said. He glanced over his shoulder at the people still snapping photos at the death scene.

“Right,” Liza said. “Besides, we still have to figure out which one of us is going to stay in our apartment and which is going to move here.”

“I thought we already had that discussion,” Polly said as they began to walk away.

“Oh, jeez.” Asher laughed.

“I have a feeling they’re going to be a fun pair to work with,” Billie said.

“Anyway, I think I’ll do a quick walk-through of the kitchen space just to make sure everything looks good inside,” Billie said.

“Don’t lock up yet,” Asher said. “I want to check the cameras out before I head in for the night. Are you going to be up for a while?”

Billie smiled. “Yeah, I’ll be up for a while,” she said. “I want to look for more information about Bianca, if I can find anything.”

“So, if I knock on your door a little later, that would be okay?” Asher said.

“Of course, it will be okay,” Billie said. She lowered her eyes and flirted shamelessly. “I’m pretty sure Waffles will be happy to see you.”

“Waffles? Not you?”

“Well, that you will have to wait and see,” she said and headed the rest of the way inside. She left Asher staring at her as she headed in. She thought his move to the boat was going to hinder their relationship, but it had done the exact opposite.
